The Utilization of Urea-supplemented Roughages

چکیده

In many parts of the world, poor quality roughages low in nitrogen are the only food available to the grazing ruminant. Experiments have shown that under some conditions, still not clearly defined, urea can improve both the digestion and intake of these roughages, and also the nitrogen status of the animal. However, there are reports from both the laboratory and the field, which indicate that urea supplements are not always successful e.g. Minson and Pigden (1961), Hemsley and Moir (1963), Lloyd Davies (1964, personal communication), Moir (unpublished data). The reasons for this anomalous situation are far from clear. This paper is a resume of some experiments carried out to determine the possible role of factors such as protein, production of higher volatile fatty acids (V.F.A.), energy availability, and minerals upon roughage digestion, particularly cellulose digestion, and upon microbial-protein synthesis when various urea-supplemented roughages are offered to sheep.

The Effect of Urea on the Utilization of Low-Quality Roughage by the Ruminant

In Australia, the main interest in urea. feeding to ruminants is the possibility of using this substance as a protein supplement for roughages so high in fibre and low in protein that they constitute sub-maintenance rations for animals grazing them. Several workers have shown that the loss of weight of ruminants fed such roughages can be prevented, or reduced, by adding a supplement of urea and...

Influence of Fibrolytic Enzymes on the in vitro Hydrolysis and Fermentation of Different Types of Roughages Treatment

The effects of pre-treating different types of roughages with alkali on the efficacy of exogenous fibrolytic enzymes for improving their digestibility were studied in vitroin factorial arrangement 4 × 3 × 5 (enzyme, treatment and roughage types). Two fibrolytic feed enzymes novozyme (N) and celloclast (C) their combination (N+C) were evaluated for their potential to improve in vitrodegradation ...

Dynamic Changes of Main Rumen Microflora and Ruminal Fermentation in Sheep Supplemented with Molasses-Urea

The digestion and utilization of roughage by sheep depends on rumen digestion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microbe quantity and fermentative efficiency of rumen supplement with molasses-urea. This experiment was conducted in 2014, eight sheep were selected and divided into two groups (a control group and a treatment group), and only the treatment group animals were supplied with m...

The stimulatory effect of the organic sulfur supplement, mercaptopropane sulfonic acid on cellulolytic rumen microorganisms and microbial protein synthesis in cattle fed low sulfur roughages.

Two metabolism trials (experiments 1 and 2) were conducted to examine the effect of the organic S compound, sodium 3-mercapto-1-propane sulfonic acid (MPS) on feed intake, fiber digestibility, rumen fermentation and abundance of cellulolytic rumen microorganisms in cattle fed low S (<0.11%) roughages. Urea was provided in all treatments to compensate for the N deficiency (<0.6%) in the roughage...

A study was carried out to investigate nitrogen metabolism in response to cecal ligation and colostomy in chickens. We used colostomized plus ceca-ligated chickens fed a low protein diet or a low protein diet supplemented with urea. When both types of diets were fed, nitrogen balance and utilization tended to increase by cecal ligation while total nitrogen excretion tended to decrease. Colostom...
